Unfortunately, the political situation in Nicaragua remains very difficult, as the next presidential elections are scheduled for November. Crime has increased significantly, so that stores have to close in the afternoon for security reasons. Food prices are on the rise and, as is often the case, it is the poorest who are hit the hardest. People face countless challenges every day to be able to feed their families and protect themselves from the corona pandemic. Government support and measures to protect the population – as they are taken for granted in our latitudes – continue to be a long time coming.
Of course, all this also has an impact on the Los Pipitos therapy center in León. The staff impose strict hygiene rules on themselves and their families: Patients and family members with cold symptoms must be sent away to avoid possible infection with Covid-19. At least medical masks are available again, their price has even decreased, and they can be financed from our direct aid fund. The teenagers from the project also produce masks from fabric for everyday use in the sewing workshop and distribute them to the families.
Even though only individual therapies can take place at the moment due to the pandemic, therapy numbers are on the rise again. The center’s director, Carla Meza, is optimistic: “After several hurricanes and a wave of influenza, which prevented many families from using the therapy services, demand is now on the rise again. The patients and their companions have confidence in our hygiene measures and know that we regularly clean and disinfect the entire center. We are pleased that there is finally no more shortage of medicines, so that we can supply all the children again.
A major highlight in December was our participation in Olympipitos, the annual sports competition organized by Los Pipitos Nicaragua. There, children and teenagers with disabilities from different regions of Nicaragua compete. This time the Olympipitos took place in León. As always, the little athletes had a lot of fun running, jumping and throwing. In the end, they all presented themselves quite proudly with their medals.
